Amber waves of insects

Scientists have recently discovered two fossil mites, which have been determined to be the oldest animals yet found in amber by more than a hundred million years. These newly found fossils have been dated at 230 million years old. They join several previously discovered record holding cohorts of the prehistoric type, including a 125-million-year-old snail, the oldest of this type yet discovered in the hardened resin. And in an homage to endless love, two 125-million-year-old dung midges have been described as the oldest preserved mating pair in the animal kingdom.
